What are spider veins?
The medical term is telangiectasia, but you are probably much more familiar with the common name of ‘spider veins’.
By definition, these are damaged, visible blood vessels which lie just beneath the skin’s surface and appear as red, blue or purple in colour. They get their common name of spider veins given they can resemble a spider web, but often these damaged veins might instead look more like tree branches.
While spider veins can form anywhere on the body, they are most commonly found on a person’s legs or face.
On the legs, spider veins are often seen on the upper thigh, below the knee joint or around the ankles.
On the face, they can develop around the nose, cheeks and chin.
Varicose veins can bulge out of the skin, but spider veins are smaller and do not make the skin bulge.
What are the causes of spider veins?
Spider veins can develop on anyone at almost any age, including those in their 20s and 30s.
The specific causes of spider veins are not always clear.
However, we do know that hormonal changes (including puberty, pregnancy and menopause) can contribute, as well as family history, sun exposure and lifestyle factors like obesity and smoking.
What are the symptoms of spider veins?
Aside from their appearance, there are generally not many symptoms to spider veins.
Are spider veins dangerous?
Spider veins are usually not something to worry about and are not dangerous by themselves.
They are usually a cosmetic issue more than anything else.
However, if you think you have spider veins that are causing you pain or discomfort, consult your doctor.
Spider veins can sometimes be an early sign of chronic venous insufficiency, which can affect all types of veins in your legs and cause pain, swelling and skin changes in your legs over time.
Can you get treatment for spider veins?
Absolutely!
Many people seek treatment for spider veins because of their unsightly appearance.
There is an easy and non-invasive treatment option available for spider vein (sclerotherapy – injection treatment).
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the unwanted veins, causing them to collapse and be absorbed by the body.
This treatment does not require hospitalisation and patients can resume most normal activities the next day.
