Which varicose vein treatment is best?
If you have developed varicose veins, you don’t need to suffer with them for life.
There are a range of varicose vein treatment options available, which can eliminate these swollen, twisted, knobbly eyesores which lie just beneath the skin.
Some people presume that getting rid of varicose veins means going under the knife for surgery, but this isn’t always the case.
There are some non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments available which can be just as effective in certain situations.
Best treatment options for varicose veins
In most cases, there is only one way to eliminate varicose veins – through medical intervention.
However, there are a few different ways that modern medicine can treat these damaged blood vessels.
Treatments for varicose veins include:
- Laser Ablation
Used to treat larger varicose veins, laser ablation can be an alternative to surgery. A focused laser beam is used to heat and destroy the defective veins. This can be done in hospital if you are privately insured or in our procedure rooms if you do not have private health insurance and is usually a walk in – walk out procedure.
- Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation works in a similar way to laser ablation, generating heat from radiofrequency energy to close off or destroy the problem veins. However, laser ablation is generally a preferred treatment option these days.
- Coil Ligation
This treatment involves inserting small coils into the affected veins to block blood flow, causing the veins to collapse and redirecting blood to healthier veins. A minimally-invasive procedure, this reduces the risk of recurrence and can eliminate the need for further surgery.
- Sclerotherapy (Injection treatment)
Usually performed in conjunction with laser therapy or coil ligation, this treatment involves injecting a solution into the unwanted veins. The solution works to damage the lining of the veins and obliterate them.
- Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
For veins which may not be visible on the surface of the skin, ultrasound technology can be used to allow a surgeon to locate and inject the affected veins with a solution which works to obliterate them.
- Surgery
While there are now many other options, surgery remains the best form of treatment for some varicose veins. The varicose veins are extracted from the legs through a series of small incisions, following an ultrasound assessment to identify the points of valve failure. This is usually a preferred option if they veins are too big to be treated by laser ablation.
