Why have a Specialist Vascular Surgeon look after your Veins ?
More than 30% of Australians will develop varicose veins in their legs at some stage in life.
Around 80% of people will also notice superficial spider veins (dermal venules or burst capillaries).
The good news is, thanks to modern medical technology, you don’t need to put up with the discomfort or complications caused by varicose veins and spider veins.
While a variety of health professionals can provide treatment, only a Specialist Vascular Surgeon is qualified to perform procedures both in and out of hospital. This significantly improves patient comfort, as hospital treatment enables both legs to be treated at the same time, with the option of a general anaesthetic if desired (making the procedure far less painful).
In addition, many patients are able to claim a portion of the costs through their private health fund.
At Laservein.co, we offer a range of treatment options to help you be free of varicose veins and spider veins.

What exactly are varicose veins and spider veins?
Varicose veins are most commonly found on the legs and usually appear knobbly, twisted, and dark blue. They can also occur in other parts of the body.
They develop when the valves or walls of the veins fail, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the vein.
Spider veins are similar but smaller, often red or blue, and may look like spider webs close to the skin’s surface.
Who gets varicose veins?
- Rare in teenagers and young adults, but can appear as early as your 20s, 30s, or 40s.
- Affect around 30% of people at some point.
- More common in women, partly due to hormonal changes and pregnancy.
- Risk factors include:
- Family history (often inherited)
- Past DVT or vein malformations
- Obesity
- Older age
- Long periods of standing (aggravates but does not cause varicose veins)
Are Varicose Veins Dangerous?
For most people, varicose and spider veins are not dangerous, but they can cause:
- Discomfort, swelling, and pain
- Itching and inflammation
- Cosmetic concerns
Serious complications can include:
- Bleeding
- Blood clots
- Ulcers
- Permanent skin scarring
Important: Varicose veins can become life-threatening if they bleed heavily or develop clots.
Can You Avoid Getting Varicose Veins?
Unfortunately, because genetics play a major role, it’s not possible to completely prevent varicose veins. If your parents or close relatives have them, you’re likely among the 30% of people who will develop them too.
While lifestyle factors can influence their severity, they are not the primary cause. Here’s what you can do:
- Exercise regularly (walking, running, cycling)
Improves blood flow and can help prevent varicose veins from worsening. It also reduces swelling and discomfort—but it won’t stop them from forming. - Elevate your legs
Provides temporary relief from symptoms, but it’s not a permanent solution. - Maintain a healthy weight
Helps reduce pressure on your veins.
The truth: The only way to completely avoid varicose veins would be to change your genetics—or walk on your hands or stay in bed forever (not exactly practical!).

Treatment options for varicose veins
A lot of people believe that surgery is the only way to fix their varicose veins, but this is only one option that is available.
At Laser Vein Co, we will assess your individual situation and recommend the best option for treatment during your initial consultation – along with answering any questions you might have.
For very large and complicated varicose veins, surgery is still the quickest and most comfortable treatment method. Only your surgeon can offer this procedure.
However, for less complex and modest problems, sclerotherapy (injection treatment) or laser ablation are more attractive alternatives, given they do not involve significant hospital time or can be done out of the hospital.
Here is a quick run-down of the treatment options available:
Elastic Stockings
While elastic stockings do not prevent varicose veins or make them go away, they can be helpful to alleviate symptoms.
They work by providing external compression support to the limb but can be unpleasant to wear due to the tightness and added warmth.
They are most beneficial when used to treat complications like ulcers when an acceptance of discomfort is necessary.
Injection Treatment (Sclerotherapy)
While commonly referred to as an injection treatment, the more technical name for this is a sclerotherapy procedure.
This treatment works well for minor superficial varicose veins, spider veins and discoloured areas.
A sclerosant solution is injected into the unwanted veins, causing them to go solid and be absorbed by the body.
Injection treatment does not require hospitalisation and you should only need a few hours off work following your treatment.
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is an advanced form of standard sclerotherapy (injection treatment).
This treatment aims to eliminate defective veins inside the leg that are flowing in the wrong direction, with the ultrasound machine assisting the surgeon to find defective veins underneath the skin to inject.
Combined with laser treatment, this is the most effective alternative to surgery and provides long-lasting results.
Laser Ablation
This minimally invasive procedure can be used to treat larger varicose veins.
A laser is used to destroy defective veins, offering a permanent solution that is comparable to surgery but has a much shorter recovery time.
This technology has become increasingly safe and effective in recent years, with newer laser devices providing a more comfortable experience.
This treatment is performed in combination with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.
Large outcome studies now rate this option for large varicose veins as being superior to surgery and sclerotherapy.
Surgery
Surgical treatment for varicose veins involves ligating faulty valves and removing or obliterating varicose veins.
This procedure—known as “ligation, puncture, and extraction”—is performed with minimal incisions and involves using ultrasound to identify valve failures.
Surgery is generally a good long-term solution and recurrences of varicose veins are often manageable by sclerotherapy.
FAQs
In most cases, there are some out-of-pocket fees for consultations and surgery that are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance funds. Cosmetic treatments are not covered by Medicare or Private insurance.
Quotes will be provided prior to any procedures.
It is not a requirement to hold private health insurance to have treatment, but increased costs do occur. Public hospital treatment is available for severe varicose veins.
However, if you require surgery, then private health insurance is recommended.
As Dr Milne is a registered Specialist, you are required to obtain a referral letter from your doctor before visiting Laser Vein Co to seek treatments so you can obtain a rebate from Medicare for your treatment.
